I am running Linux Mint on it and using the nginx web server instead of Apache which I used decades ago. Running myown web server lets me test my pages as I write them. Once they are working like I want I can then upload the filesto a web hosting service. For me it is very important to be able to preview the page before I upload as I am a verypoor proof reader. Besides typos, if I happen to mistype one of the formatting symbols it is easy to see when the pagedisplays. Something I can easily miss just reading my code in the editor. /p>p>Since I am running my own server I could open my router and host these pages myself but Id have to leave the computer on 24/7 and manyISPs frown on running servers on a home account. It would also open my computer up to another pathway for someone to hack into my system. Linux computers are maybe much harder to hack than Windows boxes although that might not be the case. There are so few Linux desktops running that they arent a high priority target, but why take the chance./p> p>I dont like WordPress, which is now the standard. So I decided to do this site using older html/css, which I am already fairlyfamiliar with. The disadvantage is that unless I include javascript it will be a static website, meaning I have to hard code each image and video instead ofloading them through a database. But that is fine with me as it more closely fits what I want to do./p> p>I originally planned on publishing it on google docs as they use to allowed static websites for free. Unfotunately I found that they ended that a couple of years ago so instead it is published on Amazon Web Services. /p>p>AWS, which lets you have web based application, is actually one of the biggest web hosting platforms. Many companies and the US government have most, if no all, of the webs and web based, i.e. cloud applications hosted there. In theory, due to the size of what Im creating is in Amazons free tier so it should not cost me any money except for the domain name, which is actually optional. The only thingthat could drive up the cost would be if there is an incredible amount of traffic. i>(In the first few months this site has costme a whopping $1.62 per month. This includes a lot of uploading and the moving of files.)/i> /p>p>I am not using to one of the many web hosting services, GoDaddy being just one. The problem with them is thatthey almost all have you set up a Wordpress site, which as I said earlier, I dont like. /p>p>The purpose of this, besides just being fun and a challenge to try and remember how to code html, is to have a place whereI can share pictures, videos, and show some of the stuff I like to do. /p>p>b>i>As an FYI, clicking on links to my pages will open the link in a new tabor separate page, depending on your browser, unless I forgot to add that to one of the links. This avoids having to use the return link at the bottom of my pages or the back button on the browser.
