Inside andout, all signs of the disease, and the medications used to treat it,should be invisible!br>/big>br>big> Thefirst hormone thats missing (the ONLY one missing in dogs with primaryAtypical or secondary Addisons) is cortisol, which managesmetabolism, stress, blood pressure and the general sense of well being.Cortisol is a GLUCocorticoid (think glucose, sugar, energy) and isartificially supplemented with a low DAILY dose of prednisone or someother oral glucocorticoid (prednisolone, hydrocortisone, etc.) Thecorrect dose of prednisone cannot be measured with a blood test - itsdetermined by your observations: the lowest dose that keeps your dogsymptom free, happy and eating!br>/big>br>big> Thesecond hormone thats missing (in dogs with primary Typical Addisonsonly) is aldosterone, which manages amd balances the electrolytes inthe body. Aldosterone is a MINERALocorticoid (think minerals: salt, sodium, potassium) and is artificially supplemented with monthlyinjections of DOCP (Percorten-Vand Zycortal are identical, except for preservatives andcarrier), ordaily oral dosing with Florinef, in amounts sufficient to achieve andmaintain normal, balanced levels of these minerals. br>/big>br>big> Although thereare recommended *starting* doses for Florinef (one 0.1 mg tabletfor every TEN pounds of body weight) and DOCP (1.0 ml for 25pounds ofbody weight), recent studies indicate excellent results can beachieved usinga “low dose protocol”span> /span>with DOCP.br>/big>br>big> Whetheryou begin high, low or in between, the *correct* dose must beindividualized, determined by closely monitoring electrolyte levels andadjusting the dose according to the individual dog’sresponse. Yourgoal is to maintain potassium and sodium values at a happy medium ofwhatever reference range the testing lab states on your dogs labreport. Valuesateither extreme end of these ranges are usually not a comfort zone foryour Addisonian dog, and can actually be life-threatening! br>/big>br>big> Forpersonalized guidance and immediate feedback, please check into the“Canine Addison’s Resources & Education (CARE)” support group onFacebook.
