The canyons were a source of shelter for early human travelers and settlers, and were used by the Comanche and Kiowa peoples for winter camps. The area where Quitaque now stands was also the site of an early Comanchero trading post, where supplies were traded to the Comanches. Ranches and farms surround town, and Charles Goodnight named his ranch here the Quitaque Ranch after purchasing the Lazy F in 1880./p>p>We are proud of our a href/history/>history/a>, which is celebrated at the a hrefhttps://comancherocanyons.org/ target_blank relnoreferrer> Comanchero Canyons Museum/a> in town. We also feel lucky to be able to share the natural beauty of the canyons, publicly accessible at both a hrefhttps://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/caprock-canyons target_blank relnoreferrer>Caprock Canyons State Park/a> and the privately-owned a hrefhttps://polecanyon.com/ target_blank relnoreferrer>Pole Canyon Ranch/a> (reservations required)./p>p>In 2015, Quitaque was named the official Bison Capital of Texas, recognizing the bison herd at the state park. They are direct descendants of the last free-range Southern Plains Bison herd, saved from extinction by Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight./p>p>Quitaque is a business center for the Quitaque valley, and is home to a a hrefhttps://www.facebook.com/QuitaqueCoffee/ target_blank relnoreferrer>coffee shop/a>, a a hrefhttps://www.facebook.com/bisoncafequitaque target_blank relnoreferrer>restaurant/a>, a href/lodging/>lodging options/a>, a a hrefhttps://merrellfood.com/ target_blank relnoreferrer>grocery store/a>, a a hrefhttps://www.yelp.com/biz/allsups-quitaque target_blank relnoreferrer>convenience store/a>, a a hrefhttps://www.fnbquitaque.com/ target_blank relnoreferrer>local bank/a>, a a hrefhttp://karolskountrykorner.com/ target_blank relnoreferrer>bakery and gift wrap service/a>, a a hrefhttps://thevalleytribune.com/ target_blank relnoreferrer>newspaper/a>, a a hrefhttps://valleyfarmstore.com/ target_blank relnoreferrer>farm, ranch, and hardware store/a>, auto mechanic shops, and several other businesses. We also have multiple churches, a Lions Club, a womens group called We the Women, an excellent community building, and a hrefhttps://tricountymeals.com/ target_blank relnoreferrer>Tri-County Meals/a>, which serves lunch and operates a food pantry. We share a school system (a hrefhttps://www.valleypatriots.com target_blank>Valley School/a>) with the nearby town of Turkey, and together we cheer for the a hrefhttps://www.valleypatriots.com target_blank>Valley Patriots/a>. /p>ul classu-liststd>li>a href/lodging/>Lodging and Recreation/a>/li>li>a href/businesses/>Businesses/a>/li>li>a href/services/>Services/a>/li>li>a href/maps/>Maps and Area/a>/li>li>a href/history/>History/a>/li>li>a href/email/>Reserve an Email Address/a>/li>/ul>script> var menuitemhome; /script>/div>!-- /contentwrapper -->/div>!-- /maincontent -->footer idfooter1>div idfooter-bar classfooter-content>div idfooter-bar1>a href/about/>about/a>/div>div idfooter-bar2>a href/privacy/>privacy policy/a> | a href/contact/>contact/a>/div>/div>!-- /footer-bar -->/footer>!-- /footer1 -->footer idfooter2>div classfooter-content>div idfooter-fineprint>Copyright © span idcryear>/span> oooMsgs Inc./div>/div>!-- /footer-content -->/footer>!-- /footer2 -->/body>/html>
